Fernkloof Nature Reserve

The early morning of 18 October 2014 saw me hiking Fernkloof Nature Reserve.   It is located in the Kleinrivier Mountains above the town of Hermanus in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

‘Winding its way behind and above the coastal town of Hermanus, Fernkloof Nature Reserve offers a close-up view of the Cape Floral Kingdom where approximately 1,474 fynbos species have been identified, making it a spectacularly diverse area.’
‘From June to November is whale season, and you are also likely to spot southern right whales in Walker Bay from several vantage points. Birdwatchers take great delight in the antics of the territorial male long-tail sugarbirds, and viewing sunbirds, grassbirds, boubous, rock thrushes and warblers.’

Several routes are available, to include:  “The orange route has an inner circuit and a longer outer circuit, both with the option of overnighting in Galpin Hut. It is a moderately arduous/difficult walk with some steep sections. The outer circuit climbs up to 700m. The inner circuit does a short loop around Galpin Hut and GalpinKop, while the other one extends east and provides access to Aasvoelkop before dropping down to join the jeep track.  Both circuits provide wonderful views of Walkerbay and the Hemel en Aarde valley, as well as interesting perspectives of the Table Mountain Group geology and the mountain fynbos vegetation.”

Hiking here is by far less challenging than some places I’ve had the privilege to visit.  Because very little ‘head-down’ body posture is required, as usually occurs during more demanding hikes, I was afforded more time to observe the wonderful scenery South Africa offers those willing to experience it.
‘The reserve has more than 60km of graded hiking trails, some of the best in Hermanus. The shortest hike takes roughly one hour to complete. It is the easiest of the trails, but still offers gorgeous views of Hermanus. The longest hike takes five hours, and rustic overnight accommodation is offered for those who want to spend the night.’
